Premiere in GT2: RTR projects begins a new chapter at Monza

A new circuit, a new championship. These are the main unknowns that the RTR Projects team will face in their debut race in the Fanatec GT2 Series at the Monza circuit. The legendary track returns to the series after a two-year hiatus, coincidentally the same length of time Jan Krabec has been away from racing. Now, he returns behind the wheel of the KTM X-BOW, switching from the older GT4 generation to the brand-new X-BOW GT2. "This car is new to me, and it's amazing. From a performance standpoint, it's on a completely different level than the GT4. Even in testing and racing in Valencia, it showed that it can compete with GT3 cars and overtake cup cars," says Krabec as the race weekend approaches.

According to the team’s manager Tomáš Fanta, RTR Projects will aim to build on the success of their official tests in Dijon, where, in mixed conditions, the X-BOW GT2 set some of the fastest times in the entire field. Monza, however, will be a much tougher challenge, with three additional KTM X-BOWs from the factory team True Racing also taking part. RTR Projects plans to participate in the European GT2 Series as a two-year project, and although it’s just starting, the goal is to bring home as many points as possible from Monza. “According to the preliminary entry list, there are seven cars in our AM category. For us and for Jan, it will be a debut at Monza, but we certainly want to aim for the best possible result,” Fanta hints.

Krabec has only spent a few dozen hours on the Monza circuit in a simulator so far and has great respect for one of the greatest legends among European tracks. “The more time I spent on it, the more respect I gained. It’s extremely fast, and the barriers are very close,” he describes. He also sees the weather, which is expected to be very variable, as a challenge. “Compared to the competition, we have a light car, so it will be hard to get the tires up to operating temperature on a cold, drying track,” Krabec predicts. In 2019, he won the ADAC GT4 Germany race at Sachsenring in an X-BOW GT4.

Krabec sees the fact that he will be racing solo for the first time as an advantage. “We’ll have more time to get comfortable, understand how the car works, and figure out its strengths and weaknesses. The good thing is that we’ll have a direct comparison with the factory team, which will include drivers like Štefan Rosina and Reinhard Kofler,” he adds. In addition to the KTM cars, most of the starting grid will be made up of Audi R8 LMS GT2 cars, alongside Porsche GT2 RS CS, Lamborghini Huracán ST EVO2, and for the first time, the Mercedes AMG GT2 will also make an appearance on track. After ending their racing program with the GT4, RTR Projects sees a big future in GT2. “We’re really looking forward to it. It’s great racing with new cars, very interesting competitors, and a lot of potential,” concludes the team’s new manager Tomáš Fanta.
