Calm Before the Storm: RTR Projects Anticipates a Tense Start to the GT2 Season

Private tests at the Paul Ricard Circuit have kicked off the first race weekend of the GT2 European Series. RTR Projects enters the elite PRO-AM class with reigning European champion Jan Krabec and Slovak driver Maťo Homola. The team dedicated the day before the race weekend to fine-tuning their KTM X-BOW GT2.

During initial testing, the team focused on new suspension components and adjustments to BoP (Balance of Performance) regulations and power output.
“We’ve done a lot of setup work. Our pace looks promising, but it’s clear everyone is holding back and not revealing their true speed. I expect Friday’s times to be about a second faster across the board,” predicts RTR Projects Executive Director Tomáš Fanta.

On Thursday, the team tested a range of scenarios that could arise during the race.
“We’re trying used and fresh tires, full and empty fuel tanks, and various combinations to make the most of Friday’s free practice ahead of qualifying,” Fanta explained.

The team is also focused on ensuring synergy between its drivers—experienced professional Maťo Homola and reigning AM class European champion Jan Krabec.
“Maťo is a seasoned driver who naturally prefers a more aggressive setup. That works for me, as it continues the path we started last year,” Krabec said, emphasizing the team’s strategy to capitalize on the KTM X-BOW’s key strength: its low weight compared to its competitors.

The real competitive comparison, however, will come during Friday’s second free practice session.
“Right now, everyone’s keeping their true pace under wraps,” confirmed Homola. Thursday marked his first extended time in the GT2 car, where he drew on his experience with the GTX model.
“The cars are similar in handling, but the difference lies in the tires and the noticeable increase in power,” Homola noted after his initial laps in the KTM X-BOW GT2. “The car feels great, the team is working flawlessly. On Friday, we’ll aim to make the most of the two hours on track. I’m looking forward to the race weekend,” he added.

RTR Projects faces formidable competition, including KTM’s factory team and entries from Audi, Porsche, Maserati, and Mercedes-Benz. The team expects a challenging qualifying session.
“It looks like Maserati and Mercedes will be particularly fast. I think the decisive moments will come during the race, especially in the second half,” Krabec predicted.
Thanks to their low weight, KTM cars are expected to have an advantage in tire conservation, which could prove crucial in the closing stages of the hour-long races.
